This Often Unheard of European Country is the Perfect Holiday Location - Here’s Why…

Albania - that’s the place. Everyone loves a trip to Rome, Paris or Barcelona and every summer these places tend to be the most popular European holiday destinations. But there are loads of hidden gems in Europe that are cheaper, quieter and arguably nicer to visit. Albania is one of them.

Here’s our breakdown of what to do when you visit this gorgeous country!

Where to stay

Tirana

The country’s capital is bursting with culture and vibrance. It is home to the country’s main airport, so if you plan on flying, it’s best to consider this airport as your first method of travel. Flights are cheaper than you may think, but booking in advance is always a good idea.

It is in the centre of the country surrounded by mountains and greenery.

Berat

Berat sits along a river and is known for its rich Ottoman history, reflected in his architecture and castle which sits on a hill overlooking the town. It is known as ‘The Town of a Thousand Windows’ due to huge windows in the buildings.

Sarandë

This is a coastal town (well, more of a resort). It is located on the amazing blue waters of the Ionian Sea. It is often the city that Albanians go to for their holidays, testimony to how lovely it is!

Costs

Albania does not use the euro - it has its own which is called the lek. £1 is roughly 140 Albanian Lek. You can get them directly from ATMs in the country, which is the cheaper and easier thing to do.

There are lots of options when it comes to choosing a place to stay - hostels are naturally the cheapest, but its best to get a hotel as they will always include letter breakfasts.

Eating out, shopping and general costs in Albania are typical of Europe - relatively low just depending on if you’re smart about avoiding tourist traps.

Staying Safe

Petty crime is the most common type in Albania, with pickpocketing the most common. Violence or discrimination against tourists is pretty much unheard of, with locals being usually very welcoming and friendly.

What to see

Theth National Park

Created in 1966 and covering almost 2630 acres, this national park is centred around the Albanian Alps. It was created to protect the natural habitats and ecosystems within the country, and now tourists can admire them without causing any destruction.

Mount Dajti

1,631m meters above sea level sits this majestic and intimidating mountain. It has cable cars and walking routes to get to it, with even a zipline to get down. Locals go here to escape their busy lives and find some tranquility.

Bora Bora Beach

Named for its tropical feel, this clean and well kept beach is hugely popular among tourists. Blue waters and white sand will make you feel far away from Europe.
