5 Ways to Spice up Your Go-To Holiday Drink Picks

Everyone loves a good holiday drink and everyone has their go-to choice. As you should, when on holiday you should know exactly what you want and how you want it.

However, if you're looking to change your usual, look no further. These simple yet effective tips will add the pina to your colada...

  1. The bottle of beer - with a twist

Ever get to the middle of your Corona, Sol or Desperados and get bored? Me too.

That’s fine - with a few extra ingredients you can spice up that regular beer for something much more tropical and exciting.

This is the easy part - drink about 1/3 of your beer and remove any garnish of lime that’s come with it. Then add a whole shot of tequila to the bottle - yes you read that right, just stay with me.

Then add a splash of orange juice and a small drop of grenadine to make it a lovely red/orange sunset colour. Add your lime back to the top of the bottle or even better add some lime cordial for some extra sweetness.

If this sounds familiar then you must already by accustomed to drinking Corona sunrise, but actually you can do it with ay beer you like! Desperados is best because it’s already made from tequila, so adding it really brings out the sweet notes of agave.

2. Bond style (aka shaken and not stirred)

Ever feel like your cocktail has separated, gone flat or just needs a rejuvenation? You’re not alone. When you’re smoking up sun it’s even easier for a drink to loose its lustre - even more when you’re swimming, chatting or tanning.

There’s an easier remedy to this than you might think. Just ask for your drink to be shaken or re-shaken over ice. This creates a really foamy and light texture to a drink, resulting in a brand new flavour and consistency.

3. Not so salty tequila

Ah yes, the holiday staple. You didn’t go on holiday if you didn’t impulsively order a shot of tequila and then nearly gag it back up.

A lot of people can’t stomach tequila, but a lot of the time this might be because of the combination of salt and lime. If you’re wanting to try something different, ask for a shot of tequila with cinnamon and orange!

Sounds crazy, but it’s a similar premise as sale and lime. Bitterness and intensity from the cinnamon and then a shot of zing and acidity from the orange.

4. Shots, shots, shots - with milk?

Another way to spice up a shot is with milk. Again, sounds crazy. But think of any super sweet liquor, like Malibu, Archers or Kahlua - pretty intense to take on their own most of the time.

Milk is great as a chaser because it neutral and a plain flavour that will instantly dull down the taste of super sweet alcohol. Don’t knock it til you try it.

5. Coconuts instead of cows

A lot of cocktails tend to have milk or emulsifier like egg yolk as a base. An espresso martini for example relies on coffee to give it a foamy top.

Shake this up (literally) by asking for coconut milk as a base - it can give classic cocktails a much more interesting taste with the sweetness and tart notes of coconut.
